Force India has become the latest team to unveil its 2010 challenger, after releasing images of its new VJM03 today. The car features the high nose and the shark-fin engine cover that has become typical of this year's designs. On the back of the team making big progress in 2009, as it captured its maiden pole position and podium finish, Force India is looking for more success this year. The new car will be tested for the first time by Tonio at this week's Jerez test and its design chiefs are confident it will be a match for the machinery that has already been unveiled. Force India to reveal VJM03 online
3 February 2010
Force India will present its new VJM03 car via an online launch on 9 February, the day before the car makes its track debut at the start of the Jerez test. The Silverstone-based squad opted to skip this week’s opening pre-season test in Valencia in favour of spending more time on developing their challenger. Fans will be able to get a first glimpse of the new car the day before it rolls out of the garage via an online presentation on the team’s official website next Tuesday from 9:00 UK time (10:00 CET). Tonio and Adrian Sutil will spearheaded the team’s attempts to build on the huge progress it made up the grid in 2009, while Paul di Resta was on Tuesday confirmed as the team’s third driver.
Force India to skip first test
16 January 2010
Force India will miss the first of the pre-season Formula 1 tests that takes place at Valencia next month. The Silverstone-based outfit will not run its new car, the VJM3, until the Jerez test that begins on 10 February. The team has chosen to delay the introduction of its car so it could have more time to develop it - a tactic similar to the one adopted by Red Bull Racing.
The complete F1 pre-season test schedule is as follows: 01-03 Feb: Valencia, 10-13 Feb: Jerez, 17-20 Feb: Jerez and 25-28 Feb: Barcelona. Force India is expected to launch their new car a few days before 10 February.

Tonio third in PRI/CKI Karting All-Star Classic
11 December 2009
During his first ever PRI/CKI Karting All-Star Classic race, Tonio came home third, just behind his former team-mate Scott Speed and winner Jan Heylen. At the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida, Tonio lost some ground in the early laps while Heylen would again hold off Speed to pace the field. The front three however were simply the class of the field as no one else would challenge them early on. Tonio made up the lost ground and was able to real in the front two after getting some heat into his tires. A few laps later, Heylen continued to show the way with Scott Speed and Tonio putting on the pressure. There were no exchanges for position however Speed and Tonio made one last effort as they came to the stripe with lap cars in front. At the line with the fireworks launching, Heylen scored the victory by just 0.044-seconds. Tonio was a close third with Buddy Rice running alone in fourth. An impression of the event, made by Pole Position TV, can bee seen on YouTube. Pictures of the event are available in our Gallery.

Desafio Internacional das Estrelas 2009: Tonio finishes 4th
29 November 2009
The fifth edition of Desafio Internacional das Estrelas go-kart race took place this weekend in Florianópolis, Brazil. After a promising start on Friday during free practice 1 (7th place) and free practice 2 (5th place), Tonio had a bad start on Saturday when he finished free practice 3 on the last spot. In the afternoon he fought his way back to the front by securing the 5th spot on the grid. During race 1, he missed victory by just 2,7 seconds, after a intense battle with race winner Michael Schumacher. On Sunday, the luck seemd to be on Tonio's side again, when he was 5th during the warm-up session. Unfortunately, Tonio had a collision with Di Grassi during race 2, which cost Tonio a lot of time and a chance to become the overall winner. He came home 12th, 20,8 seconds after race winner Felipe Massa. Michael Schumacher was the overall winner of the event, followed by Felipe Massa, Vitor Meira and Tonio.
Watch the first race on YouTube from Brazilian SporTV: part 1, part 2 and part 3. You can also watch Tonio during the press conference of race 1 (Tonio starts at 0:50).
Tonio confirmed at Force India for 2010!
27 November 2009
Force India has confirmed that Tonio and Adrian Sutil will remain with the team for the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, thus giving complete consistency in its driver line-up. Tonio retains his race seat following his move up from the team's test and reserve driver role at Monza this year. The 28-year-old Italian made his race debut in 2005 with Red Bull Racing and moved to Toro Rosso for 2006 and 2007. In 2008 he became Force India's third driver. Tonio said: "It was always my goal to be back racing in 2010 and I've finally achieved it. I feel the five races I did in 2009 were a bit of a warm-up; get back racing, learn the car, get the feeling back. Now I've done that I feel ready to really push next season. We were pretty strong in the last part of the 2009 season so if we pick up where we stopped I think we could be in for a good year. For sure points are the aim and showing everyone what we can do."
Tonio to take part in kart event
15 November 2009
For the fourth time, Tonio will take part in Felipe Massa's kart event: the Desafio Internacional das Estrelas (International Challenge of the Stars). The fifth edition of this charity kart event will be held at a new track, the Sapiens Park Arena at Florianópolis in Brazil, and will see some of the greatest motor sport stars including Michael Schumacher, Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella and Tony Kanaan. The event takes place from 27 to 29 November and the race will be broadcast on Globo TV in Brazil. Viewers of Eurosport will also be able to watch. British Eurosport 2 will be showing the event live at 1800hrs on Saturday 28 November and 1300hrs on Sunday 29 November.

2. M. Webber, Red Bull, +17.8 sec
3. J. Button, Brawn, +18.4 sec 15. V. Liuzzi, Force India, +94.4 sec
The Force India Formula One Team secured the ninth position in the constructors' championship in today's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final race of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship.
Tonio Liuzzi finished the first-ever race at the Yas Marina Circuit in 15th position. With a starting position relatively far down the field, scoring points was a tall objective, however Tonio enjoyed close battles throughout the race with both Renaults and the Ferrari of Fisichella.
The team finishes the season with a total of 13 points, with one podium, one pole position and one fastest lap to its name.
Tonio commented: "Overall I thought we got the maximum from the car today but unfortunately we had a problem with the brakes more or less from the beginning of the race so we couldn't really fight for positions. I was behind the Williams at the start and one of the Toyotas in the middle of the race so we were pretty much mixing it in the midfield. We had a problem with the soft tyres in the first 15 laps that caused a lot of oversteer so I think it is the maximum we could have achieved. We knew it would be difficult to score points and although I would have liked to get some on the board at the end of the season I am happy we have showed some good form in these five races."

2. S. Vettel, Red Bull, 1:40.666
3. M. Webber, Force India, 1:40.667 17. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:41.701
Tonio could not capitalise on the form he showed in yesterday's practice in during the qualifying session ahead of this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. He suffered a disappointing elimination in Q1 and will start tomorrow's race from the 17th position on the grid.
Tonio commented: "I was pretty happy on the first run of Q1 as the car felt really good and I was confident that we had the pace to get through to Q2. But then after we changed the tyres for the second run we had a strange problem in that the grip was not there any more. It felt weird to drive with so much less grip compared to the run before. Usually the tracks improve as we run more but this was very strange. We should have been in Q2 so we have to understand how this happened - whether it was the tyres or the tyre pressures, we need to work on this now. For sure with a lot of fuel we showed a really good performance yesterday but starting so far back will not make it easy, although in Brazil we did show that we can get very close to the points from this position. It will be difficult but I think 10th will be possible tomorrow, but points are always the aim."

Tonio continued his preparations for the last race of the season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, during the final practice. He completed three runs, two on the harder tyre compound and one on the soft. His quickest lap, 1:41.675, was the 14th quickest of the hour.

The Yas Marina circuit got its first taste of Formula 1 today as the impressive facility in the heart of Abu Dhabi's newest development came alive with the first day of practice ahead of the final round of the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship on Sunday.
The initial practice got underway at 13:00hrs local time owing to the later start of Sunday's race, with the 'afternoon' session kicking off at 17:00hrs. As a result drivers got the opportunity to experience the track in daylight, twilight and ultimately under the lights to get an accurate picture of expected conditions in the race.
Tonio used the sessions to also evaluate the set-up and aero balance of the VJM02 on the new track and recorded the 17th quickest time of the session in the morning and 15th in the afternoon.
Tonio commented: "It's a great facility here, still quite slippery with the dust but it was very interesting to drive in such different light conditions over the day. It went quite well today. I think we are very competitive and have a very strong car on higher fuel loads. We still need to work a lot on the low fuel conditions as we are not spot on but I think we are going in the right direction with the car and can be happy with the progress we made today. We knew it would be hard but it's not easy for anybody with this high temperature to find a balance but I am positive for tomorrow."

Tonio had a tough Brazilian GP today. After he managed to evade the first lap incidents, he fought his way up to the eight position. The majority of the race he was fighting yet again with Fisichella, finally Tonio finished in 12th position.
He said: "It was a long race, starting from last on the grid after the gearbox change yesterday. We made a change to the soft tyres in the safety car period, using them for just one lap to get them out of the way as we felt we couldn't do longer stints with them. On the harder compound in the first stint I had a good pace but we struggled a lot with oversteer on the second so I couldn't get past Giancarlo. Then at the end I had a brake problem, which compromised the race but at least we finished this difficult Grand Prix, which was important. We had hoped for rain as we seemed to be very competitive in those conditions but that's how it is - now we can just look forward to Abu Dhabi."

Although Tonio had graduated through to Q2, he was a victim of aquaplaning when the session eventually got underway and speared off into the barriers into turn one. The Italian was taken to the medical centre for precautionary checks but was uninjured in the accident. His VJM02 sustained significant damage in the impact and will require a new gearbox, effectively dropping Tonio five places on tomorrow's starting grid.
After the qualifying session he said: "I am really disappointed and frustrated that the qualifying ended in the way it did as I was pretty convinced I could have got into Q3 and done well - as Adrian has shown today we were very much on it. The car reacted well in the wet conditions and we showed a good performance in Q1, even if we were in traffic and couldn't do the best lap time. At the start of Q2 it was very difficult conditions and it was risky to go out but once there is a green light you have to try and go out and do your best. I am sorry for the team as we could have achieved more but I was a passenger at that stage and couldn't do anything when the car caught that puddle. All the same I think we are in good shape tomorrow and if the conditions stay like this we have a well balanced car so I am optimistic for the race."
GP Brazil: Free practice 3

1. N. Rosberg, Williams, 1:23.182 (9 laps)

3. J. Button, Brawn, 1:24.122 (6 laps) 16. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:27.341 (4 laps)
Heavy rain delayed the start of this morning's free practice ahead of qualifying until 11:42 local time. Final classification became largely irrelevant as drivers drove cautious exploratory laps, with Tonio making just one run on the extreme wet tyres before the session was ultimately red flagged when Romain Grosjean span off the wet track and into the barriers.
GP Brazil: Free practice 1 & 2

Free Practice 1:
1. M. Webber, Red Bull, 1:12.463 (29 laps)

3. R. Barrichello, Brawn, 1:12.459 (38 laps) 16. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:12.950 (36 laps)
Free practice for the penultimate race of the year, the Brazilian Grand Prix, got underway today at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace in the heart of Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo. The notoriously fickle South American weather again came into play, with light showers punctuating most of the day, making the timing for running crucial. Tonio was classified in 17th in the morning and 16th in the afternoon after hitting traffic on his potentially quickest laps.
Tonio commented: "With this unpredictable weather it's important to be out at exactly the right time to get the best of the track so perhaps the final classifications are not truly representative of the real order right now. We still have to work on the balance as it is not 100% just yet but overall the car is responding well to all the changes we have made. Unfortunately we just got caught in traffic every time we tried to do a good lap time but I'm happy we are going in the right direction for tomorrow. I think we could be in for a good qualifying, particularly if the weather stays so uncertain or if it rains some more as we have been pretty competitive in these types of conditions so far this year."

3. L. Hamilton, McLaren, +6.4 sec 14. V. Liuzzi, Force India, +15.7 sec
During the Japanese Grand prix, Tonio enjoyed a series of battles over the 53 lap race to achieve his second consecutive race finish for Force India. Using a two stop strategy Tonio was able to move up four places on his starting position after battling with the two Renaults, the Williams of Nakajima and Alguersuari's Toro Rosso.
He said: "Overall I think it was not a bad race. Starting from that position it was always going to be difficult to score points but we showed a strong pace in the race and never gave up. I could have a really good fight with Fernando Alonso and the Williams, plus also the Toro Rosso so I think it was a good effort from the team."

Tonio unfortunately did not progress through to Q2. The gearbox of his VJM02 car developed a gear selection problem in the final minutes of FP3 and with limited set-up time before qualifying he was unable to move from 19th.
He commented: "We had a few issues in the morning in free practice with the gearbox and we couldn't test everything we needed to, including the soft tyres, which cost us a lot. The guys did a great job to change the gearbox and get out again for qualifying but we had a lot of understeer in qualifying and it was not 100% as a result. To make it worse I have not been feeling at my best today so it's a combination of everything really. I hope for more tomorrow for sure."

In a far cry from yesterday's rain-lashed practice, FP3 took place under almost perfect blue skies with air temperature peaking at 27 C and track at 38 C. Tonio put in three runs, two on the hard tyre compound and one on the soft compound. After some strong times on the harder compound his final run was abbreviated by a suspected gearbox issue. His best time, 1:33.167, was the 20th fastest of the morning.

2. S. Vettel, Red Bull, 1:47.923 (6 laps) 3. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:47.931 (4 laps)
Heavy rain over the 5.807km Suzuka circuit made the opening day of practice for this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix a near washout at times, with the morning's session damp but passable and the afternoon a close non-starter as puddles and rivers covered the track for the first hour, with only the final 10 minutes allowing the field to venture out to complete flying laps.
Tonio said: "Today was quite a positive day even though the weather didn't help us. It was a difficult situation and tomorrow it seems like it is going to change again. Overall the car worked very well in the wet weather conditions and also with the intermediate tyre balance and finally in the last five minutes we could try the extreme wet balance too. Everything is responding and working well, although we do know tomorrow could be different if the weather changes, but we are optimistic."

Tonio has secured his first race finish for Force India in today's Singapore Grand Prix. The Italian raced from 19th on the grid to 14th at the chequered flag after a race-long battle with former team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella. Tonio used a two stop strategy and stayed with the Ferrari, matching Giancarlo's lap times, until his third and final stop for supersoft tyres. This final set of tyres produced excessive graining in the closing stages of the race and Tonio dropped back a little but he nevertheless pushed until the final corner to achieve his first race finish for the team.
Tonio commented: "It has been an ultra difficult weekend and race for us. The conditions are very difficult from the beginning as we were starting on the last row and trying to get some points was always going to be tough. Also having two cars with KERS in front of me didn't help. I couldn't overtake Giancarlo [Fisichella] even though I was quicker on my first two stints. On the third stint we started to have a lot of graining with the rear tyres with the soft compound and I just couldn't catch him. In the end it was a difficult race but we are more optimistic for the next races."

After the qualifying session Tonio said: "We knew we would struggle more on this type of circuit compared to the low downforce tracks such as Spa and Monza but we didn't expect it would be this much. We were suffering with a lack of traction and weren't able to find the right balance - Adrian and I seem to have the same problems. My quickest lap was quite clean, perhaps there were a couple of tenths more in it, but to get through to Q2 this time would have been quite difficult. With more fuel on board we are quite competitive but from this point on the grid it will be tough. However at a circuit like this anything can happen and if we have a good pace in the race and a good balance we could still get some points. Street circuits are always a bit crazy so we won't give up just yet."
GP Singapore: Free practice 3
26 September 2009
1. L. Hamilton, McLaren, 1:47.632 (15 laps)
2. S. Vettel, Red Bull, 1:47.909 (17 laps)
3. N. Rosberg, Williams, 1:48.332 (18 laps) 16. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:49.055 (16 laps)
The final free practice session for this weekend's Singapore Grand Prix took place under the lights of the Marina Bay Circuit ahead of this evening's qualifying. The track was considerably less dirty than yesterday's practice, although some drivers still reported relatively low grip over the bumps. Tonio continued his steep learning curve and made steady improvement to end the practice in 16th position, 1.5 seconds quicker than his FP2 time and less than four tenths from the top eight.

2. J. Button, Brawn, 1:50.356 (22 laps)
3. M. Webber, Red Bull, 1:50.416 (21 laps) 18. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:52.905 (23 laps) Free Practice 2:

3. H. Kovalainen, McLaren, 1:24.297 (35 laps) 18. V. Liuzzi, Force India, 1:50.605 (28 laps)
Tonio used the two 90 minute sessions, which both experienced red flag periods, to familiarise himself with the twists and turns of the 23-turn, 5.067km circuit, which he had never driven before today. He steadily bettered his times over the day as he got to grips with both the track and the VJM02 in high downforce configuration. The Italian posted the 18th quickest time in both sessions.
Tonio commented: "It was quite OK today. The most important thing for me was to learn the circuit and get used to the track, the bumps and the kerbs and I think we are going in the right direction. We struggled a little with the balance, which didn't help, but we did a lot of tests and tried to understand the tyres. I think we were on a good learning curve and tomorrow will be much, much better. We have a lot of work to do as we are not spot on with the balance just yet, but we have all night to think about it!"

GP Italy: Race
12 September 2009
1. R. Barrichello, Brawn, 1:16:21.706
2. J. Button, Brawn, +2.8 sec
3. K. Räikkönen, Ferrari, +30.6 sec DNF V. Liuzzi, Force India, +31 Laps
After a brilliant performance in qualifying, Tonio was unable to score any points during the Italian Grand Prix. He was forced to retire on lap 22, due to a problem with his driveshaft.
He commented: "Finally, I am racing again and I gave it 100%. We didn't make any mistakes and everything was perfect until we were in a great position, but that's racing unfortunately. I had an unusual problem, the transmission started making a strange noise and then I lost drive and couldn't push. That's racing it was just a shame as we didn't have a reliability problem until now, but that's how it is. We won't give up though until the end of the season, we want to get lots of points and I am sure we will make it."
