A1 Grand Prix Brands Hatch: Feature race & Sprint race
This season’s A1GP adventure of Tonio ended on Sunday at Brands Hatch with an overall improving pace that eventually helped him to land 2 points at the end of the feature race. The driver from Locorotondo, Italy, who is currently part of the Force India Formula 1 team, faced two difficult comeback races. In the sprint race, he made his way back to the top-10 despite the few laps available, » Read more

The problems suffered by Tonio at Brands Hatch continued on Saturday during the two qualifying sessions for the final round of the 2008-2009 A1 Grand Prix Of Nations. After suffering from serious brake issues yesterday, A1GP Team Italy had a tough time finding the right balance for the tough and twisty racetrack. The main problems are still the brakes, as well as the general grip level,
Tonio experienced a troubled start in the first practice session for the final event of the 2009 A1 Grand Prix season. The Italian, at his second start with his Nation’s team, suffered from brake troubles. On the Kent racetrack, in it’s longer Grand Prix configuration, Tonio tried to climb up the order with an unstable car, but eventually ended his day with an off-track excursion
Tonio believes he and A1 Team Italy can fight towards the front again at Brands Hatch – despite it being a circuit he has never driven before. The Force India F1 test driver joined the Italian squad in the Algarve earlier this month for the first of two race weekends this season, scoring the team’s best result of 2008/09 with a fourth place in the Sprint race.
Although Tonio couldn’t win this season’s championship anymore, he ended his first Speedcar Series season on the best possible way: with a win! After starting from the 5th position on the grid, the Force India test driver was on a charge, and after passing Al Maktoum on lap 8, he hunted down Biagi. After briefly getting ahead on lap 12 he finally made the move stick on lap 14,
Johnny Herbert scored a dominant win in the penultimate round of the Speedcar Series on Saturday morning in Bahrain, while Tonio scored a podium when he finished 3rd. After a good start Tonio began to pressure Frentzen. However as the Italian crossed the line at the end of the fourth lap, Alesi suffered a spectacular engine failure, and pulled over to park next to the pit wall.
It was an exciting final qualifying session for the season, as Johnny Herbert stormed to the top of the times with only three minutes remaining, while Tonio secured the 4th place on the starting grid for tomorrow’s race. On Bahrain’s International circuit Tonio was able to do 12 laps, with a best time of 2:07.566, 0.471 seconds slower then Herbert’s best time of 2:07.095.
Tonio is eyeing a race drive with Force India next season as both Giancarlo Fisichella and Adrian Sutil’s contracts expire at the end of 2009. The Italian is Force India’s test and reserve driver, but is hoping to earn a race seat next year for the first time since 2007. “I’m very confident about it, there are good chances for me to get back to racing in F1 with Force India,” Tonio told Autosprint.
Tonio ended his first race in the A1 Grand Prix by scoring 5 points at Portimao, Portugal. The Force India Formula 1 test driver had to face bad luck today, after handing Italy the maiden pole position in the series in yesterday’s qualifying session. In the shorter sprint race, Tonio kept second place for much part of the time, but eventually lost two spots due to a slow pit stop
Tonio showed his true potential when he grabbed pole for his first ever A1 Grand Prix race in Portimao, Portugal. During the qualifying session for the sprint race he had an intense battle with Team Netherlands driver Robert Doornbos and Team Ireland driver Adam Carroll, but finally it was Tonio who grabbed Team Italy’s first ever pole with just a few seconds to go.
